How to work from home successfully long term

I have been working from home since 2016 and have learned a lot about it during that time. Initially sceptical about working from home, I’ve taken 4 years to build it up into something. What lessons would I give myself if I could jump back to when it was initially suggested?

  • Establish a routine that feels comfortable for you, and don’t try to force it.
  • Stay regimented on work and keep yourself busy.
  • You cannot attend every team event – learn to accept and live with that.
  • Your relationships with your colleagues will differ when you see them face to face, and that’s OK.
  • Learn to feel comfortable with your own company – especially when travelling and eating alone.
  • Form a good relationship with your boss
  • Find a hobby where you can socialise
  • Don’t try and force yourself to go out for a walk every day – you won’t do it if it’s forced.
  • Make your desk functional but inspiring.
  • Make your desk comfortable and ensure it won’t hurt your back or neck.
  • Enjoy yourself!

In these times, where we are all working from home, it has become more critical than ever to understand how to do it well, succeed, and adapt to the situation we find ourselves in.

When I started working from home, I heard from a few people that it would slow my career advancement. I would hate working from home long-term and would eventually move on. None of those has happened, but it has taken time to get used to it.

It is possible to do this successfully, but it takes time, dedication, and patience!
