What happens in a house or space clearing?

Why I’m Writing This

After my recent experience of doing a space clearing at a historical site, I thought it would be helpful to explore what it actually entails and to demystify the process for anyone curious or considering it for their own space.

The Short Answer

A space clearing is an energetic process to help shift places that feel stuck or heavy.

  • Not an exorcism: I don’t have the training for that. My work is gentle, respectful, and grounded in experience.
  • I go into the place, check how the energy feels, and work with that presence—be it the spirit of the space or a spirit that genuinely needs help moving on.
  • My practice blends shamanic and druidic traditions, honouring the spirit of the land, your home, and any presences with compassion and respect, using ritual, drumming, and nature-based methods.
  • Every space, object, and journey has its own energy, which sometimes needs help, just as a human does.

It is always consent-led, and I operate a Leave No Trace policy, so I tidy up as I go. I use environmentally friendly, non-invasive methods in all my space clearings. My practice is mindful of your home, your belongings, and the natural environment, leaving no trace and minimising any physical impact.

What It Isn’t (Common Misconceptions)

  • Space clearing is not an exorcism or a religious ceremony.
  • I never impose beliefs—my process is always consent-led, non-invasive, and never judgmental.
  • I welcome clients from all backgrounds, beliefs, and identities.
  • Confidentiality and respect are at the heart of my work.
  • While I do my best to support positive change, I can’t guarantee a specific outcome.

Who It’s For (And When It Might Help)

Space clearing may help you if:

  • Your home or workplace feels heavy, stagnant, or unsettled
  • There’s been a major change or difficult event
  • You’re moving in or out
  • You want to refresh the energy in a place

If you’re unsure, a free 15-minute call lets you ask questions and see if it’s right for you.

What to Expect in a Session

Before the session:

  • I’ll ask you to fill out an intake form so I can understand your needs and boundaries.
  • You don’t need to do anything special to prepare, but tidying up can help.
  • If you have pets or children, let me know so we can make the session comfortable for everyone.

A typical session includes:

  1. A short exploration of the place—checking what energy I can pick up
  2. Opening the directions (this can involve drumming)
  3. Working with the energy or spirit, moving from room to room or focusing in one area
  4. I might use incense, drum, candles, or other tools as guided
  5. Closing the space with the same care as the opening

Sessions usually take 1–2 hours. I usually prefer to work alone, butyou’ree welcome to be present if you wish. Many clients find it helpful to let me work privately, as this helps me tune more deeply into thespace’ss energy.

What to Expect After a Session

After the session:

  • I’ll write up my notes and send you a report on what happened, what I found, and the process involved
  • I may offer suggestions about working with your place moving forward
  • If needed, I’m happy to arrange a follow-up call or visit to address any concerns or questions

You may notice:

  • The space feels lighter, calmer, or more at ease
  • Subtle emotional shifts
  • You want to open windows, rest, or make changes in your space

It’s normal to experience a range of feelings as the space settles. Give yourself and your home some time to adjust. If you have questions or feel uneasy afterwards, I am available for follow-up support.

If you’re wondering whether a clearing could help your space, a free 15-minute call is a place to start asking questions.

I operate from Edinburgh but can visit Midlothian and further afield too.  If you’re based in Edinburgh or Midlothian, I can usually arrange visits at short notice.  If you live further away, please get in touch to discuss options.
